This review is 1 year and a month post S1-L5 and L5-L4 microdiscectomy. After an injury at an obstacle course race that was completely my fault, load over capacity on a heavy lift, I had lumbar pain that eventually became a sciatic pain that was most felt in my left calf. I started Physical Therapy to resolve the issue, but in my case and situation, it was not resolving the issue the way we wanted it. The pain kept coming back immediately when walking, even after performing exercises that would relieve it. My PT recommended a few surgeons to talk to, and after looking at DISC I chose to go see Dr. Khurana. I figured if DISC gets Red Bull athletes back to performing, I would be in capable hands. Another reason I chose Dr. Khurana was that he understood why I had the injury and what I needed to do to get past it. There was no "oh you must have surgery" or "we can do surgery but never flip that 400lbs tire again". Upon initial consultation and look at my MRI, we both agreed to continue PT for a few more weeks to make sure that PT was not progressing for "me" and what I wanted to continue doing. As another reviewer stated, these things are not one size fits all. Make sure your PT, surgeon AND YOU are in line with your life goals. I felt that Dr. Khurana, and the entire DISC staff, cared about my situation and wanted to get me back to where I wanted to be. I wanted to race again that year, wanted to carry 70lbs buckets uphill, wanted to trail run for 30+ miles, wanted to crawl under barbwire, wanted to blah blah blah. Dr. Khurana understood where I wanted to be as an athlete and where I was before the injury and I felt his consultation kept all this in mind. I elected to have the surgery performed, and everything was super smooth. In on a Friday morning, out that evening and I was back to work on Monday. I was back to racing again in just over six months (Tahoe Ultra Beast, aroo!). My case is not all cases, as I had done a ton of work during the previous years that would have been considered pre-hab. The surgery experience was excellent. Everyone was very caring and explained everything to me in as much detail as I wanted. I would do it again if I "had" to. I was never second-guessing the decision. All of the post-op appointments were the same caliber. Dr. Khurana explained what I may experience in the next year or two as I started training again, so while sometimes I am alarmed thinking "uh...should I be feeling this now?" between Dr. Khurana and my PT I am guided in the right direction. He cared about how I was progressing and how I was getting back to my pursites. Shout out to Devin Blessing at Evolution Physical Therapy. They are just around the way from DISC in Playa Vista and are an excellent place to follow up your surgery at.

I am 46 years old and struggled with severe lower back pain for 18 years. I have had epidurals, rhizotomies and a microdiscectomy at L5-S1. I avoided a fusion for years because it was such a big surgery. Dr. Khurana was fantastic in his analysis of my condition due to his vast experience. He was never in a rush to perform my surgery and always said to come back whenever I was ready. His kind demeanor and attentive staff really made me comfortable during my decision making process. I am now six months post op from having Dr. Khurana perform an ALIF (anterior lumbar interbody fusion) and am 100% pain free. My low back has not felt this good since I was in my mid 20's. Before my surgery I could hardly put my shoes on and never slept through the night. I am now back to swimming, surfing, lifting weights, sleeping through the night and most importantly I am able to do everything with my kids completely pain free. You always hear the bad outcomes with spinal fusion surgery but rarely hear the positive. Dr. Khurana has a fantastic surgical team and I would recommend anyone to go see him before having surgery. He was always a pleasure to deal with and his surgical skills are second to none.

I just finished my 6 months check up with Dr. Khuarna. I am nothing short of ecstatic with how amazing my surgery went. I have been an athlete since the young age of 4th grade. I played Volleyball and Basketball all the way into college and then played some professional ball after college. I had a steller career with national titles and more. In one of my National tournaments in 99, I hyperextended backward to get a ball and cracked my lower lumbar. I did tons of rehab and continued to play on for another 10 years thinking all was good, but around age 30 I retired from playing both sports as the pain and wear and tear of an almost 20-year career was weighing on me. I didn't realize that eventually, that injury would turn into a collapsed disk causing even more pain. Getting out of bed just took my breath away and was excruciating. After knee surgery, my back pain increased to almost unbearable. I went to my doctor who referred me to a specialist who just told me to go to rehab and deal with it. Two years after that I thought there has to be something else I can do. I remembered Dr. Khurana worked on my mother's back who literally was like Humpty Dumpty in that her back was in pieces and he put her back together. I researched him and saw he was top in his field, a former athlete himself and that he put athletes like myself a volleyball player back together. I knew he would understand where I was coming from. As much as I didn't want surgery, I knew it was time to get help the pain was just about unbearable. After a short consult, Dr. Sanjay stated I needed surgery to better my quality of life. I agreed but was completely terrified at the thought of going under. At this point in my life, I am a mother of two, owner of three companies and a national speaker and I thought to myself, so many people rely on me what if this does not work but I did more research I saw the success rate of Dr. Sanjay and how all his patients had amazing results. I knew I had to do this. Fast forward I remember them telling me I would wake up pain-free after the surgery and I found that hard to believe. I also told them every time I go under I wake up vomiting. Well, When I woke up from this surgery not only was it the first time ever I woke up and actually felt good with no vomiting but I had no pain. I couldn't believe it the pain was gone. With the exception of the incision pain which I could deal with I had two c-sections previously I felt amazing. And even more amazing 2 hours after the surgery they had me up and walking. I recovered amazingly fast once I got past the first week. Two weeks after my surgery here I was walking to an event to do a presentation. And its been amazing the last 6 months I have no pain. My quality of life is amazing in so many ways. Even though with my pain I remained active I thought wow I am going to have to live with being in pain but today I have no pain. I am literally 100 percent better. When it comes to recommendations Dr. Sanjay Khurana I highly recommend, he is top in his field, his success rates are amazing, he is extremely professional and has top quality staff. The DISC center where we did the surgery was amazing as well, so much better then a hospital and I was treated like a queen with such sincere caring people. As high level athlete, I have had some amazing doctors in my in my career, but Dr. Sanjay has been the best. Thank you, Dr. Sanjay and your staff for helping me move to a pain-free life.

Dr Khurana took me over as a failed decompression patient and performed a L4 and L5 fusion. I was discharged one day after surgery and a week later I am driving my car and have no pain from my sciatic after dealing with pain for 4 1/2 Years! Dr Khurana is my current hero! There needs to be more than 5 stars for Dr. Khurana, at least 10 or more! With much appreciation, Richard W. Roeder

My review is LONG OVERDUE ...Anyone with back problems knows "One size DOES NOT fit all". A friend of mine with escalating back issues, was asking for some information, on my surgeries. She is only 3 years out- from her last surgery with another doctor. I came to Yelp to get some information, on current doctors, etc. in this area. Dr. Khurana did my 3 surgeries OVER 10 years ago. He was understanding, and proceeded slowly with my treatment. I was very fearful of any fusion after years earlier seeing my Mother temporally being unable to walk after another doctor's spinal surgery. I am into my 10th year, some days are better than others, but Dr. Khurana has given me my life back. I try to be extra careful of my back these days, and am fairly active most of the time. If you are in need of back surgery - I urge you to see Dr. Khurana, he is an amazing doctor. I my opinion - you will be in the best of "hands".

Dr. Khurana is the best. I am 38 years old, and just recently had a ACDF C5/6 and I feel great. He is such an amazing surgeon and he came highly recommended to me and when I went to see him, I knew he was the one I wanted to perform the surgery. Don't wait, call him right away if you have neck pain, numbness weakness in your arms, legs, don't wait. His staff are so accommodating and his PA Katie was great too. From the moment I walked in the office in Marina Del Rey the entire staff is awesome. Good luck.

14 days ago Dr. Khurana preformed a microdiscectomy to my left side L5-S1 disc space. I had a 5mm bulge that turned into an 8mm rupture. Initially, we discussed a fusion, as my pain and complaints were all over the map. Amazingly, after the rupture, my pain was exclusively down my left leg, zero in my back. A new MRI and office visit confirmed that a microdiscectomy would be warranted, and boy was I relieved. Dr. Khurana was very respectful of my reservations and gave me all options, both his preference of procedures and stuff he did not prefer. After that and his overall demeanor and personality is reassuring with the arrogance I've seen in other surgeons. (Did I mention this was my 3rd back surgery). Surgery day. 5am, Daniel Freeman Marina Hospital. Great facility and staff. 7:30, Dr Khurana met with my wife and I in pre-op. Was very realistic about my case, the expected outcome, the possibility of a future issue (3 surgeries at the SAME DISC SPACE) and how he was going to take steps to prevent issues. He really made clear that his version of this procedure was going to cause as little tissue damage as possible (Don't they all?) Post-op. Well, I don't know how he did it, I don't know what voodoo that he do. But when I had my first 2 surgeries, I woke up screaming in pain AND they already had me on a pain meds pump. When I woke up from Dr. Khurana's procedure, sure it was uncomfortable.... but that was it. They really didn't give anything in post o.o, nor did I need it. 30-60 minutes later, we're rolling down the halls to my recovery room (home for the next 24+ hours). An hour later, 1 shot of Torodol , and 1-2 hours later physical therapist arrives and I'm WALKING up and down the halls, using a toilet (A big thing post surgery). Was I stiff and sore all night, of course. But the pain in my leg was gone. Yes, some new pain in power back (I do believe that's from you know, a scalpel and such). The next day. Was out of hospital before lunch. Walked around the block that night. Walked the neighborhood 3 days after that. No BLTs yet (Bending, Lifting, Twisting), but with something to lightly balance against I can squat down and pick up the stuff I drop. I use a minimal amount of pain pills, maybe 2 a day (was using 4-6 plus a ton of Advil). 10 days post, wound check up is fine. My true post surgery visit is slated for 2 more weeks (4 weeks post surgery) at that time we will start the rehab/PT plan and a return to work plan. I am a firefighter/ paramedic and this was a worker's compensation claim. I am truly amazed by Dr Khurana's skill as a surgeon. Having had the same procedure preformed by another surgeon and it hurting so much (for weeks after surgery) I can't express how much better this procedure was. He is conservative and caring and wholly professional. His staff is amazing. I use Beach Cities Orthopedic in Torrance. He is also affiliated with DISC sports & spine. Since I had to work with both offices, the staff at both was great. Even with the joy that is worker's compensation claims. I will update when I start PT. Thank you Dr. Khurana for saving my career and letting me be Daddy again!

Dr. Khurana performed a micro spinal stenosis surgery in Jan. 2015 at Marina Del Rey Hospital. I've waited 2 years to give a review, one never knows how back surgery will turn out long term. Before the surgery I could barely walk, 4 Advil and 1/2 prescription pain killer got my day going. By mid day I'd take 4 more Advil and at night I'd take 4 more, this went on for several years. Today I can work in the garden, build a shed and I can play golf. I hit the ball farther at 65 than I did at 50. ... Dr. Khurana is the best and he is honest in evaluation. He didn't make promises other than I would have less pain. He hoped for the best and wanted to deliver the best. I could not ask for better, I got the best and couldn't be happier. He's worth a visit to see what he can do for you. (Still doing great at 67).

Six major spine surgeries in the last 2 and a half years. I know what you're thinking. Why would I write a great review about a surgeon who did THAT to me? Truly, it's not his fault...I definitely make him think "outside the box". That's a good thing. Prior to Dr. Khurana, I had had EIGHT previous spine surgeries with 4 other surgeons. No one, and I mean no one took the time to listen, and learn from his patient like Dr. Khurana. He cares enough to start conservative and only do the major surgeries when you're at risk. I've also been in that waiting room enough times to hear new patients sometimes grumble about the wait time...TRUST ME, he's worth the wait. Even after you've waited? He will NOT rush you out. You could not find a more patient, caring, skilled surgeon. And everyone on his staff? They deserve their own page. They're THAT good. 5 stars for everyone!

I have never done a review on any doctor but I feel it is important to let people know about this very talented doctor. I broke my back in a boating accident while in Italy almost 2 years ago. Although I did get it looked at in Italy and again in Monte Carlo, needless to say I wanted to see a US doctor and several of my friends have had procedures done by Dr. Khurana with excellent results. So I flew home and he was a able to evaluate my issues and schedule me for a double fusion the week I got back to the USA. It went very well. I had to go in this week in order for Dr Khurana to remove the screws (they had loosened and were painful and annoying) and he also did a decompression procedure on my lower back as I had severe nerve pain. I am doing fine now but had a few painful days after the surgery. I want to say that his entire staff, especially his Nurse Practitioner, has been incredible and they all have done everything in their power to make me feel comfortable. She actually called me last evening (Friday night) to make sure I felt good. I am now very hopeful that I can heal 100% and have the active life that I have been missing of late. Thank you Dr. Khurana and staff!

Dr. Khurana is so awesome. He did a fantastic job with my husband's cervical fusion back in January. He has a great bedside manner. You can tell that he really cares about the well being of his patients. My husband had to be in the hospital for about 4 days after surgery and he was in contact with me regularly updating me on the his status. My husband also has lower back problems and I won't trust anyone but Dr. Khurana to be his surgeon again for this problem. Also, Wendy and Susan were great to deal with prior to surgery. See you for follow up in July, Dr. Khurana!

Dr. Khurana was one of the most amazing physicians I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with. Not only was he thoughtful, attentive, understanding, compassionate, but also vested in my recovery. He listened to my questions, I never felt rushed, and he was always there to ease my concerns and help me through my treatment. My spinal injury was a multi-year debacle and I was basically an invalid. Being in my mid-twenties, it was more than depressing not being able to do what I wanted to physically. After my surgery with Dr. Khurana, I got my life back. Dr. Khurana gave me my life back. I'm now back in the gym, playing sports, competitively swimming, and living my life - all thanks to the hands and know-how of Dr. Khurana. I would HIGHLY recommend him to anyone having spinal issues. I'm back to 100%. He didn't push me for surgery, and we tried several other options prior to. My only regret was waiting two years to find Dr. Khurana, but boy am I thanking my lucky stars that I did.

Dr Khurana and his wonderful staff at DISC Sport and Spine actually get 10 stars!. In the last year, Dr Khurana performed 2 spine surgeries on me (cervical- ACDF and a lumbar XLIF) and both surgeries were the best things I've ever done. Dr Khurana is an amazingly skilled and competent surgeon and he is incredibly patient and explanatory throughout the whole process. His NP Susan is fantastic as are all of the nurses in the surgery center and support staff in the office.Over the last 18 months I consulted with 8 different ortho and neuro surgeons in LA, SF and Sacramento regarding my low back pain that had been on-going for over 10 years. Dr Khurana was the only clinician who suggested that less is more for me...and he performed an XLIF . Not many surgeons are adept at doing an XLIF, but I've had 2 Physical Therapist's that have been completely shocked that I'm up to the level of activity with no pain at 3 months post op. I'm thrilled to be able to get back to being an athlete again...and it's due to Dr Khurana.

I just landed into Miami coming from St. Lucia. I called the doctors office and left a message as I was continuing and laying over in LA that night . Imagine my surprise when Wendy immediately called me right back and shifted into high gear working to get me in the next AM, Really? They had me at hello

I've had 100's of doctors (seriously) and he's one of maybe 2 I've felt compelled to review. He's highly intelligent and helped sort out my 5 year chaotic medical nightmare and put me on the right path towards healing. He's a fine surgeon but worth his weight in gold when it comes to diagnostics. You won't find anyone say anything bad about the guy and he was recommended to me by several well respected doctors.

I felt it was a rushed visit, seems too many patients for one MD to handle. At least he's not one to rush into surgery, for that alone I'm staying with him.

It was difficult to know where to park. Then it was difficult to know to follow the signs. Then when leaving you have to have a code which I did but machine would no work until I also put my credit card in. These would be simple instructions to be given to new patients. My problems were not resolved yet. I didn't realize they would need my neck MRI as well but next time they will. Unfortunately I have to wait another month. Dr. Khurana was very personable and positive. He did not rush however I left with no suggestions for my discomfort.
