# Before a spine MRI: 7 details to share with the imaging team

An MRI appointment goes more smoothly when the imaging team knows about devices, prior procedures, anxiety, and practical needs ahead of time. Preparation should follow the instructions for your exact scan and health history.

## 1. Confirm the clinical question and body region

Ask the ordering clinician what the scan is intended to clarify and how its result could affect care. Confirm which part of the spine is being examined and whether previous images are needed for comparison. A scan should connect to a clinical question rather than simply produce a longer list of findings.

If symptoms have changed since the order was placed, tell the clinician before the appointment. Ask who will discuss the results and arrange that follow-up. Having the report appear in a portal is not the same as understanding how it relates to your symptoms and examination.

## 2. Report every implanted or attached device

MRI uses a strong magnetic field, so device screening matters. Tell the imaging team about implanted devices, pumps, stimulators, and other relevant equipment before scheduling. Provide the exact model or device card when available. Do not decide safety from a general statement that an implant is modern or that you had an MRI previously.

Ask the imaging team what documentation they need and whether another clinician must be involved. If the device has changed, been revised, or has components remaining from an earlier procedure, mention that. Let the qualified imaging team determine the conditions under which the scan can proceed.

## 3. Mention metal exposure and prior operations

Answer the screening questions fully, including questions about metal fragments or relevant occupational exposure. Tell the team about prior surgery even when you are unsure whether hardware remains. Uncertainty is useful information; guessing no to keep the appointment simple can prevent proper screening.

If you have records, ask how to send them in advance. Bring requested documentation on the day as well. Follow instructions about clothing, jewelry, electronic devices, and personal items. The staff can explain what may enter the scanning area and what must be stored outside it.

## 4. Discuss contrast and relevant medical history

Some spine MRI examinations use contrast and others do not. Ask whether contrast is planned and what information it is expected to add. Report kidney disease, previous contrast reactions, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, and other medical details requested by the team.

Do not assume that an experience with contrast for a different type of scan predicts this examination. Ask the imaging clinician to review the relevant history and explain the plan. If laboratory testing or additional review is needed, clarify who arranges it so that the preparation is complete before arrival.

## 5. Raise claustrophobia and positioning difficulties early

Tell the scheduling team if enclosed spaces are difficult or if pain makes lying still challenging. Ask what support, positioning options, communication arrangements, or other accommodations are available. If medication or sedation is being considered, it requires a coordinated plan rather than an improvised dose from home.

Ask whether any alternative scanner would be suitable for the clinical question and device requirements. Request an explanation of how to signal the technologist during the examination. Knowing what happens if you need help can make the visit easier to anticipate without promising that every scan will feel comfortable.

## 6. Confirm transportation, eating, and medication instructions

Preparation may differ when sedation is involved. Obtain the facility's instructions about eating, drinking, regular medicines, and whether an adult must accompany you afterward. Do not drive after a sedating medicine unless the treating team has explicitly cleared the relevant timing and circumstances.

Ask what to do if you feel ill, cannot follow the preparation, or lose access to your planned ride. Keep the imaging center's contact information available. Calling ahead gives the team an opportunity to revise arrangements rather than discovering an important problem after you have already traveled there.

## 7. Plan the conversation after the scan

Ask when the report is expected, who will review the images, and how you will receive the explanation. Bring your original questions to that discussion. Request a distinction between findings that fit your symptoms, incidental findings, and anything that needs further evaluation.

Keep copies or access instructions if another clinician may need the images. If new urgent symptoms develop while waiting, seek appropriate assessment rather than relying on a pending routine report. The value of the MRI is in how it informs care, not simply in completing the test.

## Questions to bring to your consultation

Choose the questions that matter most to you. Bring them along, and ask us to explain anything that is unclear.

- What clinical question is this MRI intended to answer?
- Which device information or surgical records do you need before scheduling?
- Does my history of metal exposure require additional screening?
- Will contrast be used, and what medical history affects that decision?
- What support is available for claustrophobia or difficulty lying still?
- Do I need special medication, fasting, or transportation arrangements?
- Who will explain the results in the context of my symptoms?
