## Plan for your operation and your household

Recovery depends on the procedure, health, symptoms before surgery, and the demands of daily life. MedlinePlus distinguishes shorter recovery after some disc procedures from the longer course of more extensive operations and fusion. Ask your team which expectations apply to the operation you will actually have.

Describe your home: stairs, bathroom access, a low bed, pets, children, and whether you live alone. Ask what help you may need at first and whether any equipment should be arranged. These details are easier to solve before discharge than after you arrive home tired and uncomfortable.

## Decide who can help with which tasks

Make a practical list of the activities you normally manage. Transportation, groceries, meals, laundry, caregiving, and pet care may each need a different arrangement. Ask the team which tasks you should plan to delegate and how long assistance may be needed.

If help is limited, tell the team before surgery rather than assuming you must somehow manage alone. Ask who can assess discharge needs and what options are available. Have one person, if you choose, join a planning conversation and keep the written instructions. A support plan should be realistic about availability, distance, and the physical demands of helping.

## Make medicines and wound instructions understandable

Request an up-to-date medicine plan that explains what continues, what changes, and whom to contact about side effects or refills. Ask the team to reconcile instructions if more than one clinician prescribes medicines. Do not improvise changes because two documents seem inconsistent.

Ask for a demonstration or explanation of wound care, showering, dressings, and any brace if one is prescribed. Repeat the plan back in your own words. If the instructions use a term you do not know, ask before leaving. The surgical team's individualized instructions should guide care at home rather than another patient's online checklist.

## Discuss movement, driving, and work separately

Ask how you should move through the first days at home and what activities need limits. Clarify walking, stairs, sitting, lifting, bending, and the way to get in and out of bed. Request specific guidance from your team or therapist rather than guessing from the size of the incision.

Driving and returning to work are separate decisions. Explain the commute, medicines, hours, lifting, and concentration your job requires. Ask what criteria will guide clearance and whether a staged return or workplace modification is possible. A single recovery date rarely answers every practical question.

## Know how to get help and when to seek it

Keep the office number, after-hours route, and follow-up details somewhere easy to find. Ask which concerns can wait for a message and which require immediate assessment. Wound changes, new neurologic symptoms, or unexpected worsening need clear instructions.

Chest pain or shortness of breath warrants emergency help. New bowel or bladder control problems or major weakness also need urgent assessment. Your discharge team should explain the warning signs relevant to your operation. If instructions are unclear, clarify them before leaving; you should not need to decide alone whether an important change is part of normal recovery.

## Agree on how recovery will be followed

Before discharge, confirm who you will see, when, and whether any tests or records are needed. Ask how the plan changes if a milestone is delayed and when rehabilitation may be introduced. Bring questions about sleep, energy, activity, and the symptoms you had before surgery to each review.

Our spine team includes Dr. Amandeep Bhalla, Dr. Brandon Ortega, Dr. Leonel Hunt, and Dr. Sanjay Khurana, whose practices include procedures with different recovery demands. Ask the team caring for you to turn general expectations into a plan for your operation, household, and priorities. Keep a copy that everyone involved can follow.

## Practice the tasks you will manage at home

The American College of Surgeons emphasizes the information and skills patients and caregivers need after discharge. Ask your team to demonstrate the tasks your own recovery will require and watch you or your helper explain them back. That may include understanding the medicine schedule, recognizing wound concerns, or knowing how to reach the team. If reading small print, hearing instructions, or remembering a discussion is difficult, ask for a format you can use. Clear discharge information should work for the person who will actually carry out the plan.

## Walk through your home before procedure day

HSS’s spine surgery guide discusses preparing the home before surgery, including access to everyday items and reducing trip hazards. Use that as a prompt to tell your own team about stairs, bathroom arrangements, pets, and periods when you will be alone. Ask which changes matter for your specific restrictions and whether equipment or a therapy assessment is needed. Arrange practical help for the tasks you cannot safely manage. Another hospital’s guide can help you identify questions, while your surgical team should supply the instructions that apply to you.

## Questions to bring to your consultation

Choose the questions that matter most to you. Bring them along, and ask us to explain anything that is unclear.

- What help will I need at home for this particular operation?
- Do stairs, living alone, or caregiving change discharge planning?
- Who will explain medicine changes and handle refills or side effects?
- What exactly should I do for dressings, showering, and any prescribed brace?
- How should I progress walking and ordinary household tasks?
- What criteria determine driving, work, lifting, and exercise clearance?
- Which symptoms need emergency help or an urgent call?
- When is follow-up, and how will the plan change if recovery is slower than expected?
- Can my helper and I demonstrate the tasks you expect us to manage after discharge?
- Do my stairs, bathroom setup, or time alone change the discharge plan?
- Who resolves a problem if the written instructions and a medication label seem inconsistent?
