# 7 timing questions about injections before joint replacement

If you are considering joint replacement, tell the surgical team about every recent injection before booking another. Timing depends on the joint, product, planned operation and your individual risk factors.

## 1. Put the injection history on one page

Record the date, side, joint or tissue treated, substance and location where the injection was performed. Include injections received outside the surgeon's office. If you do not know the product, request the procedure record rather than guessing from the phrase pain shot. Distinguish an injection into the joint being replaced from a procedure elsewhere in the body. That detail gives the surgical team a useful starting point for assessing timing and may prevent a last-minute change in the schedule. Keep the records even if the injection was performed months before you considered surgery.

## 2. Ask why timing matters for this operation

The team may recommend an interval between an injection and elective surgery because of concerns such as infection risk or tissue effects. The evidence and protocols differ by procedure. A recommendation for a knee replacement should not automatically become a rule for a shoulder tendon repair, or vice versa. Ask the surgeon to explain the reason for the interval used in your case and whether the exact product, number of prior injections or your health history changes that advice.

## 3. Coordinate before receiving another injection

If a replacement consultation is approaching, contact the surgical office before arranging a new injection for the same joint. Explain how difficult the symptoms are and ask whether temporary relief would affect the possible operation date. This is a practical tradeoff: an injection might help you manage a delay, but it could also change scheduling. Ask for the advice in writing and share it with the clinician performing the injection so you are not left carrying two conflicting plans between offices.

## 4. Review health factors alongside the calendar

Timing is one part of preparation. Tell the team about diabetes management, skin problems, recent infections, immune-suppressing medicines and any changes in your health. Ask which issues need assessment before an elective procedure and who coordinates that work. A calendar interval alone does not establish readiness for surgery. Conversely, a recommendation to wait should come with an explanation of what will be reassessed, rather than leaving you to interpret a date as the only measure of risk.

## 5. Make a symptom plan for the waiting period

Describe what you need help doing while a decision or date is pending: walking to work, sleeping, caring for family or managing stairs. Ask which medication, activity adjustment, walking aid or therapy approach fits your situation. Do not stop prescribed medicines or intensify exercise to compensate for the delay without guidance. If the current plan is impractical, say why. A useful bridge plan specifies what you can do now and who you should contact if function declines or a new symptom appears.

## 6. Know whether the surgical date is tentative

Ask which preparation steps still need completion and when the date becomes firm. If an injection changes the recommendation, clarify whether the operation must be rescheduled and how the office will confirm the new plan. This matters when you are arranging leave, travel and help at home. Keep a dated copy of the current instructions. When several clinicians are involved, request direct record exchange instead of assuming each office can see the other's notes or injection history.

## 7. Leave with one coordinated decision

Before proceeding, summarize the plan back: which injection is or is not being considered, the expected surgical timing and what symptoms should prompt a call. Ask the surgeon who makes the final decision if circumstances change. Our related clinician profiles can help you find a joint-care consultation, but your treating team must set the individual interval. Bring the specific records to that visit. Clear coordination is more useful than following an online countdown that does not account for the operation you are actually planning.

## Questions to bring to your consultation

Choose the questions that matter most to you. Bring them along, and ask us to explain anything that is unclear.

- Which previous injections matter for this operation?
- Can your team obtain the exact product and procedure record?
- What interval do you recommend, and why?
- Would another injection change the proposed surgery date?
- Which health factors need attention before surgery?
- How should I manage symptoms while waiting?
- Who will confirm the final timing with both offices?
